Contentful isn’t an ecommerce platform. It is the content layer in a composable commerce stack. A commerce engine such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Shopify, commercetools or SAP Commerce Cloud handles products, pricing, baskets and checkout. Contentful manages everything around them: campaign and landing pages, editorial content, product storytelling, and content for every brand, market and channel. The front end then brings the two together. Organisations choose this set-up when their commerce platform’s built-in content tools can’t keep up with how often marketing needs to change the site.
In a typical composable commerce set-up:
Each system does what it is best at. Merchandisers manage products in commerce, marketers manage content in Contentful, and neither has to wait for the other or for a developer to publish a change.
Contentful is API-first, so it can work with almost any commerce engine. Several have ready-made connectors:
Salesforce completed its acquisition of Contentful on 1 September 2026, so Contentful and Salesforce Commerce Cloud now sit under the same roof. For Commerce Cloud customers, that makes Contentful the obvious choice for a modern content layer, and closer integration with Commerce Cloud, Data 360 and Agentforce is likely. Contentful still works with any commerce platform, though, so a move to Contentful doesn’t commit you to Salesforce Commerce. We’ve written about what the acquisition means for your roadmap.
Contentful is usually a strong fit if you:
It may be more than you need if you run a single store with modest content needs, and your commerce platform’s built-in content tools already do the job. A composable stack adds a licence, an integration and a front end to maintain, so the benefit has to justify the cost. Our Contentful pricing guide sets out what the licence involves.

Yes. The Salesforce Commerce Cloud Connector app brings B2C Commerce products and categories into Contentful, and Salesforce completed its acquisition of Contentful on 1 September 2026, so closer integration is likely.
You need developers to build the front end and integrations. After launch, marketers and merchandisers can create and change content, campaigns and product features in Contentful without development work.
