What is Contentful

Contentful is a composable content platform that lets businesses create, manage, and deliver content to any digital channel from a single, structured content hub. It began life in Berlin in 2013 as one of the original headless CMS platforms — decoupling content management from the presentation layer — and has since grown into something considerably broader: a platform spanning content management, visual experience building, AI-assisted content operations, and real-time personalisation. Today Contentful powers digital experiences for more than 4,800 enterprises, including close to a third of the Fortune 500, and its infrastructure serves over 180 billion API calls every month.

The core idea remains the same: content is created once, structured properly, and delivered anywhere — websites, mobile apps, digital signage, commerce storefronts, and increasingly the AI agents and chat interfaces where customers now expect to find answers. That last point matters more than it did even a year ago. Structured, API-accessible content is exactly what AI systems need to assemble accurate, on-brand experiences, which is why Contentful has become a foundation of choice for organisations preparing for agentic, AI-driven customer journeys.

The right content platform is essential for any business aiming to compete in a digitally driven world. So, what is Contentful today, and why is it a preferred choice for so many enterprises around the globe?

Why Choose Contentful?

Contentful’s headless, API-first architecture means content isn’t locked into any single website or template. Every piece of content is stored as structured, reusable data that can be delivered to any platform or device — and integrated cleanly with the rest of your technology estate, from commerce and CRM to analytics and marketing automation. For organisations managing multiple brands, markets, or languages, this structure is what makes content operations scale without multiplying effort.

Where Contentful has changed most is who it serves. Historically a developer-led platform, it now gives marketing teams direct control too: Contentful Studio provides a visual, low-code way to assemble pages and experiences from governed, on-brand components, without raising a development ticket. Developers, meanwhile, still get the extensive APIs, SDKs, and framework integrations that made Contentful a favourite in the first place — so both sides of the team work faster, in the same system, without compromising governance.

And because everything in Contentful is structured and machine-readable, it is well positioned for the AI era: your content becomes something AI tools and agents can reliably retrieve, assemble, and personalise — with your brand rules enforced rather than hoped for.

Contentful Capabilities

Understanding what Contentful is today means looking beyond the CMS label. The platform now covers four connected areas:

Structured, modular content: Content is modelled as reusable, typed components rather than page-locked copy. Create a product description, campaign message, or legal disclaimer once and deploy it consistently across every channel and locale — which is also what keeps multi-brand and multi-market estates consistent.

Contentful Studio: A visual experience builder that lets marketers design and launch on-brand pages and campaigns using pre-approved components from your design system. Speed for the marketing team, guardrails for the brand.

AI Actions: Native AI capabilities embedded across the content lifecycle — translation and localisation, SEO optimisation, variant generation, alt-text creation and more — all operating within brand and governance rules rather than as bolted-on tools. Contentful also connects content directly to AI agents, so the platform can serve as the governed content layer behind conversational and agentic experiences.

Contentful Personalization: Built on Contentful’s acquisition of Ninetailed, this delivers real-time, contextual personalisation natively within the platform — including AI-driven audience and variant suggestions — without requiring a separate customer data platform to get started.

Alongside these, Contentful offers a marketplace of 100+ integrations and apps, plus enterprise-grade governance: granular roles and permissions, taxonomy, and the security and compliance controls that large organisations require.

Contentful and Salesforce

In June 2026, Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire Contentful, positioning it as the native content layer for its Agentforce AI platform. The deal is not expected to close until later in Salesforce’s FY2027 and Contentful’s API-first, stack-agnostic architecture — and its roadmap — continue as before, so nothing changes for customers today. But the move is a strong signal of where digital experience is heading: customer data, AI agents, and structured content converging into one connected stack. We’ve written about what the acquisition means for your roadmap in more depth.

Contentful Pricing

Contentful pricing is structured around three platform plans. A Free tier supports learning and small projects; a Lite plan (from $300 per month) suits smaller businesses managing a single site or project; and the Enterprise plan — custom-priced — adds the scale, security, governance, and support that larger organisations need.

The newer capabilities — Studio, AI Actions, and Personalization — are licensed as add-ons, primarily on Enterprise plans, with usage-based options for AI. In practice, this means the right configuration depends heavily on your use case: how many brands, markets, and channels you operate, how much personalisation you plan to run, and how far you want to take AI-assisted content operations. An experienced partner can help you scope licensing to what you’ll actually use — often the difference between a platform that pays for itself and one that quietly overruns its budget.

Partner with a Contentful Agency

Selecting a certified Contentful partner, like Remarkable, can significantly enhance your implementation. As a Contentful partner, we design and build structured content estates that are ready for what’s next — from replatforming off legacy DXPs such as Sitecore or Optimizely (restructuring content properly, not lifting and shifting), to implementing personalisation, content operations at scale, and AI-agent-ready content architectures.

Working with a Contentful agency gives you access to expertise across strategy, experience design, engineering, and optimisation — from initial content modelling and migration through to ongoing improvement. That partnership ensures your content strategy is aligned with your business goals, not just your launch date.

Understanding what Contentful is — and what it has become — is crucial for businesses looking to modernise their content operations. Its structured approach, composable architecture, and native AI and personalisation capabilities make it a strong choice for enterprises that want to deliver consistent, dynamic digital experiences everywhere their customers are. By leveraging Contentful’s platform and partnering with an expert agency, businesses can stay ahead of the curve as digital experience enters its agentic era.
