Sitecore and Optimizely (formerly Episerver) are both enterprise digital experience platforms built on .NET, and both now offer a SaaS platform alongside PaaS and on-premise options, with AI built in. The biggest differences are where each is strongest: Optimizely leads on experimentation and has a dedicated B2B commerce product, while Sitecore offers a broad, composable suite with strong personalisation and content operations. The right choice depends on your priorities, your current platform and your team, not on which is “better” overall.
Remarkable is a Sitecore Platinum Partner and an Optimizely Platinum Solution Partner, so we implement both. This is how we compare them in 2026.
| Sitecore | Optimizely | |
|---|---|---|
| SaaS platform | SitecoreAI (formerly XM Cloud) | Optimizely SaaS CMS, within Optimizely One |
| PaaS and on-premise | Sitecore XP and XM, on Sitecore Managed Cloud (PaaS) or self-hosted on-premise or in your own cloud | Optimizely CMS 13, on Optimizely’s DXP cloud (PaaS) or self-hosted on-premise or in your own cloud |
| AI | Agentic Studio in SitecoreAI, with pre-built AI agents and Agentic Flows | Optimizely Agent Platform (formerly Opal), charged in usage credits |
| Experimentation | A/B/n testing built into SitecoreAI (Conversion Optimization) | Web and Feature Experimentation, a market-leading testing heritage |
| Personalisation and data | Sitecore CDP and Personalize | Optimizely Data Platform and Personalization |
| Commerce | Sitecore OrderCloud | Configured Commerce (B2B) and Commerce Connect (B2C) |
| Content operations | Sitecore Content Hub, with DAM | Content Marketing Platform, with DAM |
Both platforms now centre on visual, component-based page building. SitecoreAI gives marketers visual page building and a headless architecture by default. Optimizely’s Visual Builder is the default editor in both its SaaS CMS and CMS 13, and CMS 13 brings the PaaS version on Optimizely’s DXP cloud broadly level with SaaS. In both cases, the editing experience is far better than on older versions, which is a strong reason to upgrade from Sitecore XP or Optimizely CMS 11 and 12.
Both vendors have made AI central to their platforms. Sitecore’s Agentic Studio, at the core of SitecoreAI, lets marketers build and run AI agents and multi-step Agentic Flows for campaign planning, content creation, migration and testing. It launched with 20 pre-built agents. Optimizely’s AI, renamed from Opal to the Optimizely Agent Platform in September 2026, works across the suite: CMS, content marketing, experimentation and commerce. Optimizely charges for the Agent Platform in usage credits, so check how AI is packaged and charged in any quote you compare.
Experimentation is Optimizely’s heritage. Its Web and Feature Experimentation products are among the most widely used testing tools in the market and can be used with any website, not just Optimizely CMS. Sitecore’s strength is personalisation driven by customer data, through Sitecore CDP and Personalize, and SitecoreAI now includes A/B/n testing through its Conversion Optimization capability. If a structured testing programme is a priority, Optimizely has the edge. If real-time personalisation from a customer data platform matters most, Sitecore is a strong fit.
Optimizely offers two commerce products: Configured Commerce, built for B2B manufacturers and distributors, and Commerce Connect for B2C, which runs alongside its CMS. Sitecore’s OrderCloud is a headless, API-first commerce platform that suits composable builds. For complex B2B selling, Optimizely’s dedicated product is usually the simpler route. Read our guide to Optimizely Commerce.
Neither vendor publishes prices. Both quote based on the products you need, your traffic and the number of sites, and both are significant enterprise investments once implementation is included. The cost difference usually comes down to which products you need: buying a CMS, experimentation, personalisation and commerce from one vendor tends to be cheaper than assembling them separately. Our Optimizely pricing guide explains what drives Optimizely costs.
Most organisations comparing the two are already running one, often an older version. Switching platforms is a major project, so the first question is usually whether upgrading what you have is the better option. Sitecore XP customers can upgrade within XP or move to SitecoreAI, and our Sitecore Exposure Review costs those options in two weeks. Optimizely customers on CMS 11 or 12 can move to CMS 13 or to SaaS. Because we work with both platforms, we can give you a straight answer on whether switching makes sense.
Get an independent view. As a Sitecore Platinum Partner and an Optimizely Platinum Solution Partner, Remarkable implements both platforms and can help you choose, upgrade or migrate. Talk to our Sitecore or Optimizely teams, or get an Optimizely quote.
Neither is better overall. Optimizely is stronger for experimentation and B2B commerce, while Sitecore is strong in personalisation from customer data and composable content operations. The right choice depends on your priorities and current platform.
Yes. Episerver acquired Optimizely in 2020 and took on the Optimizely name in 2021, so Episerver CMS and Commerce are now Optimizely CMS and Commerce.
Neither publishes prices, and both quote individually. The cost depends mainly on which products you need, your traffic, the number of sites and implementation.
Yes, but it is a significant project involving content migration, a new build and integrations. Compare it against upgrading your current platform before deciding.
Yes. Remarkable is a Sitecore Platinum Partner and an Optimizely Platinum Solution Partner, and implements, upgrades and supports both.
